Fly Fishing Supplies

Fly fishing is differentiated from conventional fishing because fly fishing is a method of casting line instead of lure. In fly fishing, fish are caught by using artificial flies cast with a fly rod, fly reel and a fly line.  Fly fishing requires proper casting that can be modified depending on the conditions.  The forward cast is used frequently. The fly angler, using his forearm, whisks the fly into the air, back over the shoulder until the line is straight, then forward.   The goal is to cast and land the fly on the water.  Other variations of the casts used are the roll cast, the single- or double haul, the side- or curve caste or the tuck cast.  Fly fishing can be done in either fresh or saltwater using the correct fly fishing supplies.

Fly fishing is a combination of the great outdoors and quality fishing supplies.   The first item needed is the fly rod.  Fly rods come in an assortment of sizes corresponding to the type of fish to be caught.  For example, small fly rods could catch a small freshwater pan fish.  Conversely, a large fly rod could catch a large saltwater game fish. Carbon graphite is the material used to make fly rods.    Fly rods have a stripping guide, and a large-diameter single line guide with snake guides.  Snake guides are spaced along the rod and help manage the fly line.   Fly reels are utilized to store fly line and provides a braking device for heavy, fast moving or fighting fish. The fly line is usually coated with plastic but is heavy enough to be able to send the fly to the target.  Fly lines are specialized for the same reasons as fly rods.  It depends on whether catching fresh or saltwater fish as well as the size of the corresponding fish.

Another one of the important fly fishing supplies is the artificial flies.  Artificial flies come in a wide variety of sizes, weights, colors, etc. which match local insects that are appealing to fish.  Some examples include aquatic and terrestrial insects, crustaceans, worms, baitfish, vegetation, flesh, spawn, small reptile, amphibians, mammals and birds.  They are made by attaching natural and synthetic materials onto a hook with thread.  The natural materials can include hair, fur and feathers.  While the first artificial flies were made of natural materials, the use of artificial flies using synthetic materials is now more prevalent in fly fishing.  The most common synthetic materials used are rubber and mylar. Terminal tackle is used to attach the artificial fly to the fly line.  It also provides the right staging to attract the fish to the fly while fly fishing.

Fly fishing could not happen without hooks and a tackle box.  In the category of fly fishing supplies, hooks for saltwater flies must be corrosion resistance and exceptionally durable. While most saltwater hooks are made of stainless steel, the strongest hooks are made of high-carbon steel.  The hooks differ in size from #8 for smaller fish to #5/0 for larger fish.  A tackle box holds all the supplies needed in an organized container.
