Taxidermy Fishing Supplies
Taxidermy Fishing Supplies consist of reproducing a life-like three-dimensional representation of an animal for permanent display. Sometimes the actual skin of the animal is preserved and mounted over an artificial form and other times the animal is completely reproduced with man-made materials.
Taxidermy performed on fish requires certain tools to do the job correctly. Taxidermy fishing supplies that you will need are a skinning knife, in order to remove the skin of the fish without damaging it, a “cheeker” tool, designed to loosen cheek meat through the eye socket, and a membrane separator, which is an excellent tool for slipping under the shoulder girdle to separate fragile skin membranes from bony areas without tearing the delicate skin.
Taxidermists find that fish of the warm water variety work better for skin mounts because their skin is thicker. Cold water fish have a very thin, fragile skin that is not easy to work with because it shows every small bump underneath it and salt water fish are found to be mostly made of all man-made materials.
One of the more important Taxidermy supplies is the interior body of the fish in which the skin is mounted to, which is called a manikin. These are usually made of rigid foam. You can carve one yourself out of a block of foam or buy a pre-made one from a supply company. You may need to purchase an artificial head to mount to the body if you are unable to use the original.
Most taxidermists who work from all man-made materials must have excellent artistry skills. The skin of the fish must be painted accurately to look real, with all the details of the scales and colorations precise. So the Taxidermy supplies must include paints, brushes, glues, and sealants. The artificial gills must be inserted and the mouth must be carved out of the mold and painted or an artificial one must be put in. If you are not using the real skin, then you must replace the fins with replicas, and even if you are using the real skin, the original fins may not be in the best shape to use so replicas may be needed anyway.
The last Taxidermy supplies needed are a stand or mount to display your finished product. There are many types of these just depending on the size of your fish. From table top displays to wall displays to displays hanging overhead, you will be able to find just what you are looking for to put your prize catch in the spotlight.
